DESIGNING THE RIGHT PATIO COVER FOR YOU:
MATERIALS:
The materials used to build your Patio cover & Gazebo are important elements for the engineering, design and function. We provide many options for you to choose from based on your individual taste and needs.
Woods:
For your Patio Cover or Gazebo, we recommend choosing from 5 types of natural wood for outdoor structures.
1. Douglas Fir: relatively inexpensive, medium resistance to rot and insects, Better durability when it is primed & painted.
2. Pressure-treated: economical, chemically treated so that it has a high resistance to rot & insects.
3. Western red cedar: more expensive choice. good natural resistance to rot & insects. Excellent for stains, sealers & most paints.
4. Redwood: more expensive choice. Good natural resistance to rot & insects. Excellent for stains, sealers & most paints. Light weight. Good fire-resistance.
5. Brazilian Hardwoods: Ipe, Red Mangaris, etc…: fairly expensive, excellent resistance to rot, insects & fire. Finished with sealers or penetrating oils. Very heavy & durable.
Aluminum:
Aluminum Patio covers are generally less expensive than wood, long lasting and practically maintenance free. Aluminum will not crack, burn, warp or get termites.
1. Solid – This would be a better choice for more shading and less sunlight coming through. IT will provide you with a great seating area during the wintertime a well as keeping leaves and dust out of the area. There are two types of solid aluminum covers:
a. W Panel: The least expensive option. This material is corrugated. Panels come in various sizes (2’ – 4’ wide and As long as 24’.) A good material for carports awnings and trailer parks.
b. 3” insulated: the best for out-door living. Stronger and more aesthetically pleasing. Panels come in various sizes (2’ – 4’ wide and As long as 24’.) A good material for Patio covers, Patio Enclosures. Because of its thickness (3”), it can easily obscure all types of fixture wiring such as a ceiling fan or light.
2. Lattice – Lattice patio covers are traditionally built with 4” x 4” posts, a 4” x 8” beam, 2” x 6” rafters and a 2” x 2” lattice on top. These covers allow more sunlight to come through but still provide a decent amount of shading.
Paints and Finishes:
There are 3 types of finishes that are available to you:
1. Oil-based enamel: variety of colors including high gloss. Great color intensity.
2. Acrylic/latex enamel: variety of colors but less glossy than oil-based. No hazardous fumes.
3. Solid and semi-solid -Color stain: penetrates wood surface and provides a better bond. No hazardous fumes.
PATIO COVER INSTALLATION:
Once you have decided on what type of design and material you would like… it is time to get started!
PatiO COVER SITE PREPARATION: (when hardscape needed)
1. Level and grade soil.
2. Set up drainage.
3. Dig pier footings
4. Lay down hardscape.
PATIO COVER ASSEMBLY:
We begin this process with setting posts, beams and other structural parts. We make sure to make frequent quality checks during this process, ensuring that the structure is level, square, and securely anchored.
COMPLETION:
This final stage of work is the most detail-oriented. The elements that we focus on during this process are Trim-work, painting, hardware installation and detailing.
PATIO COVER LIGHTING:
Patio cover lighting is an important part of the design process. It allows for safety, nighttime enjoyment or a romantic evening atmosphere. Available products include low-voltage deck lights, post lights, step lights etc….
